1986 Trimbach Riesling Clos St-Hune

Pale to medium gold. Intriguing fragrance of fresh grain and a gentle buttery notion make up for the lack of any detectable fruit aromas. On the palate clear and austere, with a really cool minerality. Its bone-dry character is further emphasised by lemony acidity. Some might call it mean, although its steely purity will appeal to scholars of the lean dry school of Riesling. (MS)

RS 2 g/l. A good vintage for Alsace, especially for Riesling – very ripe with great depth and a beautiful elegant mineral nuance. Pale green gold. The fact it's so pale it suggests a fair amount of sulphur was used. Edge of lime and lemon peel. A hint of honey. Lots of development. Developed a sort of dry cumin aroma in the glass. Bone dry and very tangy but not that intense. I'd say it’s very slowly losing fruit. (JR)

Relatively light, tart, and lean, Trimbach's 1986 Clos Ste.-Hune is still young, but it appears to lack the extract, concentration, and intensity of top vintages. I found it decidedly inferior to the 1983 and 1976.||The notes for this wine are taken from the description of Series II - Flight A of the 1995 tasting conducted in Munich by Helga and Hardy Rodenstock. Many years after the tasting from which this note derives allegations were made concerning the authenticity of old and rare bottles of wine sold by Hardy Rodenstock to collectors around the world. The matter has been the subject of numerous articles, litigation and at least one book.
