Mézes Mály is one of only two sites in Tokaj to be classified as a “Great First Growth”, with deep loess over volcanic bedrock. Royal Tokaji owns 11 of the 19-hectare south-facing vineyard, the name of which literally means “honey place”. The nose is shy at first, but, with air, thick honeycomb mingles with honeysuckle and candied ginger. The structure of this wine is what impresses most right now, however, needing time for its aromatic complexity to unfurl. You can instantly feel the vibrancy here, a wine of incredible energy, despite the intense core of ripe fruit (apricot, mango, pineapple). The balance here defies its 206.9g/l residual sugar. Pinpoint, pure and gloriously fresh. The finish is near-eternal, with a spicy perfume that lingers long after the wine is gone.

Mézes Mály is one of just two vineyards classified as a great first growth in Tokaj. The vineyard is situated on the outskirts of Tarcal with its slopes overlooking the Great Hungarian Plain. Its volcanic bedrock is overlaid with deep loess soil. Royal Tokaji owns 11 of its 19 hectares planted with Furmint and Hárslevelű with an average age of 36 to 40 years. RS 206.9 g/l, TA 6.9 g/l . 6,204 bottles made. Substantial weight in both glass and mouth. Serious wine that is only just starting to unfurl. Some savoury notes as well as the characteristic apricot juice of Tokaj plus extra tingle. There is still lots to chew on here. (JR)

The 2018 Tokaji Mézes Mály 6-Puttonyos, one of the Royal Tokaji Co's most revered single vineyards, has an entrancing bouquet with wild honey, marmalade, Lyle's Golden syrup scents that retain wonderful delineation and focus. The palate is quite brilliant. It leans a little towards Sauternes in style, especially in terms of weight and texture, yet without that cloak of new oak. This lends it openness and brightness. The 2018 offers an incredible purity of fruit, and it fans out gloriously on the finish. This comes highly recommended because Tokaji doesn't really get much better than this. (206.9g/l residual sugar and 6.90g/l acidity)

A very elegant and balanced single-vineyard Tokaji from one of the two classified great first growths. The nose is incredibly complex, with aromas of quince jelly, tangerine peel, dried pineapple and hints of chamomile, linden, juniper berries and crushed stones. It’s balanced and long, with a medium to full body. I love the lightly astringent presence that fills the mouth, making it compact and textural yet keeping the wine delicate and silky through its long, caressing finish. Drink or hold.
