Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2019-2026, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Aug 2019

While the 2018 was still fermenting in mid-June, the 2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese Trocken offers a clear, coolish and flinty nose. This is source from 5- to 6-year-old vines with noble genetics (clone Schlangengraben) grafted on weak rootstocks. Macerated for four hours and vinified in fuders, it was kept on the stirred lees until March. This is a fresh, juicy, intense and creamy-textured Riesling. It is a well structured but not very expressive representative of world famous terroir. Tasted in June 2019.

Revealing a hint of green in its color, the 2016 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is rocking stuff that delivers mouthwatering notes of sweet peach, sugared citrus, and mint in a medium-bodied, off-dry, balanced style. It’s one of the more fruit forward efforts here yet stays vibrant, clean, and balanced.

Prüm's 2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese (Auction) has a deep, precise and complex yet not overly fruity bouquet of ripe fruits and lovely floral notes. Pure, fresh and piquant on the palate, this is a straightforward Spätlese with grip and tension but also finesse and great elegance. The finish is intensely rich and fruity but encountered by this remarkable refreshing piquancy and lingering grip. This Spätlese (AP 15 17) is far too young to drink in the next 10 years, but it will surely reward your patience. Tasted March 2018.

Generous fruit and ginger scent with apricot and sweet citrus on the palate. Has the extra weight that is missing from the Graacher. Tremendous nerve. (RH)
