The 2013 Delaire Graff Botmaskop is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec, 90% from the estate plus a block of Cabernet from down the valley; it is whole berry fermented with destemmed fruit to encourage a little carbonic maceration. Matured in 60% new French wood for 16 months, it offers has a nicely defined nose with touches of cedar and dark chocolate-tinged fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin, rendering this easy-drinking and approachable in style, with just a touch of spice on the finish.

Again it has a leafy quality to the flavour but there’s a beautiful balance that indicates restraint without loss of fruit depth. Lively finish, moreish. (JH)

Pungent aromas of redcurrant, sour cherry, fresh herbs and pepper, lifted by a floral topnote; comes across as less raw than the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve despite having similar technical numbers. Sweet, suave and light on its feet, showing good peppery lift to its flavors of red berries, mint and herbs. Finishes with refined tannins and noteworthy length. The wine's touch of sweetness (2.6 grams per liter) works very well here.
