Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2015-2032, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Jul 2015

Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 2002 La Romanée Grand Cru bottled by Bouchard Père & Fils has candied red fruit on the nose, touches of blood orange and mandarin developing with time, all nicely defined. It become ever more fragrant in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly leafy red berry fruit. The tannins are not as fine as the best 2002 Côte de Nuits although there is a pleasing, almost fiery finish. It just misses the class and sophistication I was hoping for and it feels a little short. Tasted June 2015.

A stellar wine, the 2002 La Romanee sports a gorgeous nose of violets, roses, spices, raspberries, and cherries. Medium to full-bodied, it is super-ripe, wonderfully elegant, fresh, pure, and exhibits an exceedingly long finish. Great velvety waves of candied red, bing, and black cherries dominate this decadent (yet refined) gem’s personality. Its tannin is perfectly ripe, sweet and syrupy, rendering the wine seamless and sensual. Wow! Projected maturity: 2009-2020. Importer: Clicquot, Inc., New York, NY; tel. (212) 888-7575

Deep ruby-red. Superripe yet almost magically vibrant aromas of black fruits, chocolate liqueur and mint. Hugely concentrated, powerful and thick, with fruit of steel and great class. Finishes with uncanny breadth of tannins and persistence. An obvious knockout. Like the top grand crus from Bouchard, this will benefit from six to eight years of cellaring.

This saw slightly more oak than the La Romanée of the Vicomte Liger-Belair but this will rapidly be absorbed and I did not find any material differences between this wine and the wine reviewed in the La Romanée Progress Report below and thus I repeat that note here for ease of reference: An adroit trace of wood frames stunningly elegant, dazzlingly complex black fruit aromas, leading to sappy, mouth coating, powerful and very deep if presently tight and somber flavors of astonishing richness and length. But it's the seamless harmony, superb purity of expression and sheer class that distinguishes this. In a word, breathtaking. Allen Meadows, Burghound. Apr01,2004
