Bright yellow with a green tinge. Nose dominated by wet stone and crushed rock. A densely packed, penetrating mineral bath on the palate, showing a chalkier, more saline character than the Batard. The wine's flavors of white peach and liquid stone are wonderfully pure and tactile, but the wine's powerful impression of salty dry extract suggests that this very backward wine will repay extended cellaring. Finishes classically dry but in no way hard.

The 2014 Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru has a gorgeous bouquet with granite and flint intermixed with apricot blossom, lemon curd and later, yellow flowers. This is mercurial in the glass, constantly bringing you back. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity -- nectarine and white peach, a touch of the fine lees towards the finish that fans out gloriously. Long in the mouth, nuanced and charming, there is a sense of completeness emanating from this "knight". Is it the best 2014 Chevalier-Montrachet that I tasted from barrel? Maybe not, but it is still a very fine Grand Cru.

Barrel sample. One large barrel. Very calcaire. Much earlier malo than the Bâtard. ‘This needs time. I may not bottle this next spring. With Caillerets this really needs time in barrel.’ A bit broader than I would expect. Light and lively but not the elegance and tension that I hoped for. Good but not great wine. Just a bit restrained and skinny. (JR)

Healthy bright yellow. Subtle, scented aromas of pear and wet stone. Fat but dry, communicating a compelling light touch to its flavors of white stone fruits, crushed rock and flowers. Not especially high in acidity but finishes with superb subtle mounting perfume and noteworthy energy.
