A brilliant showing, the 1999 Hermitage Pavillon is a thrill a minute and just a magical effort from this great estate. Thrilling smoky dark fruits, crushed rocks, bacon fat, wood smoke, and forest floor notes all flow to a rich, textured, layered Hermitage that is smack dab in the middle of its drink window. Powerful and rich, yet elegant and incredibly long, it has everything you could want from Syrah and has another two decades of longevity. Wow.

Just 700 cases. Subsection of Bessards. 50% new oak. Very dark crimson. Rich and spicy on the nose. A little dusty on the palate but chock full of life. There's a biology lesson in here, it's so alive. Quite opulent and brazen. Maybe not the purest Hermitage but certainly very satisfying. (JR)

Lively crimson. Rich, round and wild on the nose. Correct, smooth, lively, very punchy – really alive! Masses of tannin tucked in there but there is also lots of extract. Nothing out of balance. Most impressive – though there’s an undertow of iron filings lurking in the background again! Toasty. Second bottle much more open and quite different – almost as though made by maceration carbonique. Lots here though. (JR)
