Note di degustazione
The 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes, which is 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre. It’s a classic, traditional wine that has lots of peppery herbs, leather, graphite and caramelized cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors. Nicely balanced, with sweet tannin and impressive mid-palate depth, it’s an undeniable success in the vintage and will drink beautifully through 2024.

(made entirely with whole clusters): Deep ruby. High-pitched, mineral-tinged raspberry and cherry scents are complemented by suggestions of candied flowers and peppery spices. Silky, sweet and sharply focused, offering intense black raspberry, blueberry and floral pastille flavors and a subtle touch of bitter cherry pit. Manages to be both powerful and lithe, finishing with sneaky tannins and outstanding, floral-driven persistence.
85% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre. Not especially aromatic but there’s ripe dark fruit in spades. On the palate, more elegant than I expected and a much better balance than the straight Châteauneuf. Still a bit rustic but full of flavour. (JH)
