The 2006 Uhlen R Erste Lage is remarkably pure yet intense on the nose. The palate is quite sweet, round, very fruity and lacks the counterpoint for the moment. However, this is a long-distance runner. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

Roth Lay stands for red rock and this wine is grown on red quartzite containing a high proportion of magnesium, aluminium and iron oxide. 18 months lees contact. Almost honeyed on the nose and well rounded, with fantastic extract. Creamy and seductive, the macho in me probably marked this down for lack of an edge, but Löwenstein had actually decanted this wine. More the smooth complexion of a Leonardo DiCaprio than the chiselled chin of Clint Eastwood. (MS)
