Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2025+, Allen Meadows, Burghound, Apr 2013

A perfumed and highly complex nose features the classic sauvage character of a fine Renardes with plenty of spice, earth and underbrush nuances present on the very fresh mix of red currant and plum aromas. There is outstanding intensity, richness and concentration to the big-bodied mineral-driven flavors that also display an abundance of palate coating dry extract on the tremendously long finish. This doesn't have the same underlying tension as the Rugiens but it's even longer. A qualitative choice but note that these are two very different wines. The always understated and modest Alexandre Gaunoux describes the 2010 vintage as "a completely classic vintage. The growing season was difficult with a lot of ups and downs but in the end we obtained excellent quality fruit. After that it was just a matter of trying to coax the quality of the fruit into the wines in a fashion that allows the terroir to express itself fully. I really like the vintage though it will require considerable patience as the wines are clearly meant to age." If you enjoy traditionally made Burgundy then the Gaunoux wines are highly recommended as this is one of the finest domaines in all of Burgundy. Gaunoux noted that the 2010s were bottled in May and June, 2012. Note further that the domaine's policy of releasing older vintages means that every wine reviewed below is, according to Mme Gaunoux, available. I also call your attention to the fact that there are quite a number of other Michel Gaunoux wines that I have reviewed over the years accessible in the Burghound database

Domaine Michel Gaunoux

Domaine Michel Gaunoux is today run by Michel’s grandchildren, Anne and Alexandre, with a guiding hand from their mother. Everything here is extremely traditional, and the family has been quietly making rich, complex and age-worthy Pommard and Corton for over half a century.
