1996 Dominus Napanook Vineyard

There are 2,000 cases of the 1996 Napanook, a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 13% Petit Verdot. Made in a peppery, spicy, herbaceous, earthy style, it exhibits a dark plum color, an intensely aromatic cassis and pepper-scented nose, a lush entry on the palate, and succulent, low acid, rich, concentrated flavors with more tannin than the 1997. Already drinkable, the 1996 is appealing for its intense fragrance and rich flavors. It should age well for 10-12 years. Good red-ruby. Complex nose combines black cherry, violet, tobacco, herbs and a whiff of game. Supple in the mouth, but much less lush and deep than the '96 Dominus. With less middle-palate material, the tannins seem slightly dry and rather abrupt. Just a hint of finishing greenness.
