I also had a chance to revisit the 2006 Rosso di Montalcino, which is strikingly beautiful, not to mention still quite young. The wine reveals endless layers of intensely perfumed fruit backed up with considerable structure and a gorgeous, textured finish. It is flat out great.

I also had a chance to revisit the 2006 Rosso di Montalcino, which is strikingly beautiful, not to mention still quite young. The wine reveals endless layers of intensely perfumed fruit backed up with considerable structure and a gorgeous, textured finish. It is flat out great. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. This is another set of stunning wines from Poggio di Sotto and proprietor Piero Palmucci. I tasted everything in the cellar through 2010 and was deeply impressed. The only problem with these wines is their limited availability in the US. Hopefully that will change soon. Biodynamic farming, low yields and extended cask aging are the rule at this tiny jewel of a property At press time the estate was changing their US importer.

Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2013-2021, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2010

The 2006 Rosso di Montalcino is a touch darker and firmer than the 2007. Fresh violets, tar, cherries and licorice flow from this rich, textured Rosso. The wine reveals gorgeous intensity in the estate's hallmark style, which favors a weightless expression of fruit typical of Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir. With air, the bouquet literally jumps right out of the glass, showing incredible definition. A long, yet firm finish rounds things out in style. Poggio di Sotto's 2006 Rosso is without question one of the finest Rossos to emerge from Montalcino in many a year. It is a jewel of a wine with plenty of upside potential. Both the 2006 and 2007 Rosso spent 24 months in cask.
