Healthy mid ruby with orange tinges. Ever so slightly dusty and sweet on the nose and quite closed. Earthy, stony notes with a hint of spice (cumin seeds) and leather. Aeration brings wonderful supple cherry fruit underpinned by dry, fine tannins. Finely tuned and balanced. Refreshing. (WS)

The 2010 Barolo Acclivi opens to smoke and tar-like notes of road pavement and shaved licorice backed by dark fruit and spice. Tobacco, ash, chopped mint and autumnal leaf add delicate nuances to the back. This is a tightly wound, almost nervous expression of Nebbiolo that will soften and relax in five to ten years. Drink: 2016-2028. Based in Verduno, Comm. G.B. Burlotto is named after its founder Commendatore Giovan Battista Burlotto. This burly man was one of the original Barolo protagonists and a first proponent of the noninterventionist winemaking style that is so celebrated today. Burlotto's 2010 Barolo Acclivi is pointed and direct. Dried cherries, underbrush, herbs, spices and game are some of the notes that take shape in the glass. The 2010 shows gorgeous energy and textural allure, but it is also a bit sauvage at times.
