Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2019-2031, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Oct 2019

Good medium red. Lovely perfume of raspberry and flowers complicated by subtle soil tones. Seamless, balanced and moderately rich, offering nuanced flavors of red fruits, flowers, earth, herbs and spices and no rough edges. This seems fully mature but has the spine and energy to last. Finishes with refined tannins, subtle sweetness and lovely slow-building savory length. Incidentally, the last time I tried this wine--in 2017 at the estate--it was silky and sweet but a bit more decadent and seemed to be evolving quickly. But, judging from the wine's low pH, this bottle may well be more representative. It was certainly firmer and more delineated. (13.15% alcohol; September 26 harvest; 35 h/h; 3.25 pH)

Hail at the start of August but Clos des Ducs was protected by the village so yields were a healthy 35 hl/ha. Harvest 26 September, pH 3.25. Firm and very typical Clos des Ducs. Fine acidity and freshness with great race and line. Super-pure and disciplined. (JR)

(one of only six remaining bottles in the cellar, according to Guillaume d'Angerville): Medium red; not brown but not especially saturated. Wonderfully complex, evolving Burgundy nose combines still-fresh dark berry and cherry aromas with musky soil tones and spices. Then silky and sweet, even a bit decadent, on the palate, displaying a very fine-grained texture and captivating inner-mouth floral and spicy lift. Not a big or particularly sweet wine but nicely balanced and evolving gracefully. Finishes with firm, well-integrated tannins and acidity and lovely lingering perfume. Guillaume d'Angerville noted that this wine--or at least this bottle--has evolved a bit faster than he thought it would.

Pointed, focused nose. Good depth of ruby. Delicate, fragile and smells quite mature. A little austere and maybe a bit too fragile. Lots of acidity. (JR)
