The 2016 Barolo Piè Franco is every bit as impressive as it was last year. What a wine! Rich, powerful and explosive, the 2016 possesses unreal depth and stature to burn. Once again, I am so impressed with the wine's presence. The Franco is usually ethereal and fleeting, but not here. The 2016 is a bold wine that demands attention. Dark red fruit, sage, iron, leather, licorice and rose petal open with a bit of coaxing. Readers who can find the 2016 are in for a real treat. It is without question one of the wines of the vintage.

The 2016 Barolo Piè Franco is surprisingly virile in 2016. If I had tasted the two 2016s blind, I would have likely mixed them up. Dark cherry, menthol, sage, lavender, spice and savory herbs give the 2016 myriad shades of nuance as well as complexity. A wine of real depth and power, the Franco is simply stunning in 2016. It will need a bit of time to be at its best - the 2016 is a long-distance runner. In 2016, there was not enough volume to do submerged cap fermentation. Boy, is it gorgeous.

Serralunga d’Alba’s Cappellano is one of Barolo’s most legendary producers, producing ultra-traditional styles of Nebbiolo. Made famous by Teobaldo and now in the hands of his son Augusto, the estate is best known for its Barolo Piè Franco, a wine from ungrafted vines in the Gabutti Cru.
