With fruit sourced from ancient vines in Gabutti (in Serralunga d'Alba), the Cappellano 2017 Barolo Otin Fiorin Piè Rupestris occupies that perfect moment in time, that magic moment, when Nebbiolo shines from the inside out. I really fell in love with this wine thanks to its weightless quality of fruit, its ethereal personality and its softly lingering aromas of licorice, redcurrant, cigar ash and blood orange. The fruit never fades, and the wine soothes the palate thanks to its tannins that are finely polished and silky. The 2017 is drinking beautifully right now.

The 2017 Barolo Rupestris is a gorgeous wine that marries classical austerity with the slightly riper profile of the year, a mix of aromas, flavors and textures that is utterly beguiling. Sweet red cherry, spice, rose petal, mint and cedar all open in the glass, all framed by wiry tannins that will need time to soften. This is such a gorgeous and alluring Barolo.

Serralunga d’Alba’s Cappellano is one of Barolo’s most legendary producers, producing ultra-traditional styles of Nebbiolo. Made famous by Teobaldo and now in the hands of his son Augusto, the estate is best known for its Barolo Piè Franco, a wine from ungrafted vines in the Gabutti Cru.
