Pure fresh apple fruit mingled with licorice and vanilla make for a fetching aroma and inform a silken palate for a soothing as well as generously juicy performance. For all of its textural richness, this wine from largely centenarian vines adjacent to the Rotlay finishes with striking transparency to stony, alkaline and mouthwateringly saline nuances. At 12 percent alcohol, it still retains a lovely sense of lift, though one can imagine that to have let this must ferment to dryness would have risked sacrificing clarity, refreshment and fruit intensity as well as, of course, buoyancy. (The word “Ur,” signifying something ancient or primordial, is set in quotation marks on the label, although normally uralt is written and spoken as a single word.)

This is one of the best medium-dry rieslings produced in the Mosel in recent years. Very subtle and complex spice and golden fruit aromas. Really succulent and really elegant. The finish is really complex with a great lemony freshness. Drink any time until 2030.

From very old, ungrafted vines planted around 1910, the 2015 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Feinherb Ur-alte Reben displays a super ripe and concentrated Riesling fruit, with some tropical fruit aromas and a very subtle flint/slate aroma in the background. Rich and round on the palate, with a perfectly ripe, lush and very intense fruit, this is an impressive, powerful and persistent Sonnenuhr. It has delicate acidity and remarkable concentration. The finish is enormously long and salty, very complex and well structured. Great aging potential here.
