Fantastic detail and clarity on the nose – sweet black cherry, blackberry fruit very pure and cocentrated under a subtle backdrop of clove, earthy savoury spice, a touch of volatility too gives a floral lift. Detailed, dense, high quality tannins giving freshness over what is a very high level of ripeness in the fruit – unctuous black cherry, plum and blackberry syrup. So concentrated – fantastic sustain on the finish too. This is how you make heady St Emilion.

79% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc. Certified organic FR-BIO-10. Dark garnet. Ripe and gently maturing from primary to tertiary notes but plenty of black plum at the core. A hint of leather. Ripe but a bit chewy on the palate. Not quite enough freshness for harmony and a bit of heat on the finish. (JH)
The 2019 La Mondotte is very subtle on the nose with red berries, briary and sous-bois scents, well-defined and quite transparent in style. The palate is fresh and somewhat peppery on the entry, with noticeable acidity for the vintage. Linear and strict, old school in many ways with a structured, foursquare finish. This obviously needs time in bottle. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.
Tasted blind. Very dense. Rich and perfumed nose. Rich, grainy palate. A little drying on the finish. Curranty flavours. But lively on the palate. Even if not that long. (JR)
