Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2013-2018, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2012

The 2001 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata/Torriglione is starting to show early signs of maturity. Worn in leather, spices, crushed flowers and dried black fruits are some of the notes that flow from this elegant, classy Barolo. The 2001 Rocche isn't likely to make old bones, but it is in a sweet spot right now, where there is lovely tertiary complexity and also enough fruit to support as much as another decade of aging. My preference would be to drink the Rocche over the next few years.

Contrary to the vast majority of growers, Roberto Voerzio has always maintained that 2000 was a better vintage for him than 2001. After having tasted both vintages extensively over the last few years, its pretty clear Voerzio is right. The 2001s haven’t held up as well as the 2000s I reviewed last year and are developing at a faster pace. Not surprisingly, both of the Baroli Voerzio bottles only in magnum have developed particularly gracefully. A Leonardo Lo Cascio Selection, Winebow, Montvale, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620

The terrific 2001 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata/Torriglione shows an aromatic nose of flowers, spices and menthol along with plenty of ripe red fruit and licorice flavors on a medium-bodied frame of superb length and structure. It is the most accessible of the Barolos and will be the first of the wines to reach maturity.

Good medium red. Exotic aromas of redcurrant liqueur, flowers, minerals, brown spices and mint. Silky and suave on entry, then bright and fine-grained in the middle, with terrific energy. Velvety-smooth but not quite thick. The longest of these 2001s today, building inexorably, with the very fine tannins spreading out horizontally to saturate the palate. A wonderfully elegant, sweet La Morra Barolo in the making. (The 2001 Sarmassa di Barolo was completely mute on the nose and impenetrable in the middle palate, with its huge tannins currently overshadowing its raspberry fruit. I will wait to taste this wine in its finished form.) Other Recommended Barolos and Barbarescos:
