Crushed stone, struck flint, lime zest and peppermint all rush to the fore in a remarkably penetrating, pungent aromatic display, with walnut, apple, and white currant emerging from behind. The correspondingly multifaceted midpalate is firm but polished, dense and full (at around 13% alcohol) but in no way heavy. The prodigiously persistent finish is pithy, alkali-tinged and stone-saturated, yet superbly focused, animatingly bright and refreshingly juicy. This bottling illustrates a point that I like to reiterate – namely, that Bockenau’s top slopes (even though scarcely anyone, including wine experts, took notice of them until the present century) need take a back seat to none of the Nahe’s most renowned.

The 2018 Stromberg Riesling GG is very clear and mineral on the bright, deep and intense yet transcendent nose that is full of crushed stones and perfectly ripe Riesling fruit. Mouth-fillingly lush yet precise and fresh on the crystalline and silky palate, this is a full-bodied and powerful yet refined and elegant, tightly structured and sustainable Stromberg that reveals great talents and should be cellared for another couple of years. 13% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in October 2019 from a bottle that was declared as Fassprobe (a sample) and thus didn't indicate an AP number.

Very exotic grapefruit and flint, from extremely rocky, steep soils. Guava and lemon notes, too, as well as spices, wild herbs and hints of smoke and fresh mint. The palate has a very supple, succulent and fleshy feel with such intense and rich, powerful fruit on offer. The concentration here is something else and the fusion of yellow citrus and salty minerals is seamless. Very long. Drink or hold.

Not all Fröhlich’s wines smell exactly the same, but some are very similar, and the Stromberg with its pungent fragrance of crushed green vegetation and intense mint is not too far off the Felseneck. On the palate it seems just a tad more conciliatory with the taste of sweet gooseberry and ripe crunchy rhubarb. Minerality still rocks but is slightly less austere, the finish salt-lickingly delicious. (MS)
