Muga are one of the giants of Spanish winemaking, founded in Haro in 1932, and are still owned and run by the same family. Prado Enea is a blend of 80% Tempranillo along with 20% shared between Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. Along with the grapes for Torre Muga, the Prado Enea grapes are always the last to be brought into the winery. In this way, an ideal level of ripeness is ensured. This wine is aged for 12 months in 16,000-litre oak vats, at least thirty-six months in oak casks and a minimum of thirty-six months in the bottle. Prado Enea is one for the long haul, at its best after 10 years of age and, according to Juan Muga, the Grandson of the founder, can last “forever” – as James Suckling clearly agrees below.

The Gran Reserva Prado Enea is an icon of Rioja, sourced from vineyards planted in three towns of northern Rioja Alta—Sajazarra, Cellorigo, and Fonzaleche—where old vineyards on white soils abound. The 2010, a mature wine, is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano aged for 36 months in barrel. It showcases herb and sour cherry notes, complemented by dried flowers, plums and a subtle layer of cigar box. Dry, silky and juicy, delicate tannins provide support and texture to a nimble, flavorful flow. It skillfully combines both power and delicacy and still has plenty of time to develop its full potential.

Prado Enea is a wondrous wine, an extraordinary marriage of an essentially modern outlook, but within a gran reserva framework. The best of both worlds, in other words. After 36 months in French oak and extended bottle age, this fantastic vintage is really starting to sing; sweet but dark fruits, soft spice and black pepper, a firm tannic grip, yet with an ethereally silky texture. Beguiling from start to finish.

(aged for 16 months in large oak vats, followed by three years in French oak barrels) Vivid ruby-red. A highly complex, expansive bouquet evokes ripe red berries, cherry liqueur, pipe tobacco and mocha, with a smoky mineral overtone lending urgency. Sweet, mineral-laced black raspberry, cherry-vanilla and floral pastille flavors show impressive depth and are complemented by suggestions of spicecake and bitter chocolate and show impressive back-end energy. Combines power and delicacy with a sure hand and finishes supple, sweet and very long, with silky tannins making a late appearance.
