Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2019-2033, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Apr 2019

Moderately saturated red. Wonderfully suave, mellow, inviting scents of raspberry, mocha, smoke and underbrush; the most resolved and integrated nose to this point of the tasting. A classic, harmonious Clos des Lambrays with impeccable balance and a wonderfully refined, silky texture to its flavors of red cherry, red berries, mocha and underbrush energized by high notes of pepper and spices. Not a powerhouse but this beauty fills the mouth while conveying a magically weightless impression. Finishes with sweet, perfectly supported tannins, a sexy floral quality and subtle building length. Two thousand one was a great vintage for Morey-Saint-Denis grand crus, noted Thierry Brouin, who told me he also loved the Clos de Tart. About as elegant as this wine gets. This vintage was the lowest in total acidity of my tasting but the wine hardly lacks for verve. And it has blossomed beautifully in the bottle. In fact, this is the highest score I've yet given for this vintage of Clos des Lambrays. (13.8% alcohol; 3.62 pH; 3.3 g/l acidity)

Medium red. Very sexy, mature, slightly unrefined aromas of raspberry, strawberry, mocha, brown spices, earth and leather. Sweet strawberry and spice flavors are nicely framed by firm-edged but harmonious acidity. Not hugely fat or expansive but solidly built and energetic--and showing well now. Ultimately rather suave wine, finishing with substantial dusty tannins that should hold the wine for at least another decade. Classic Burgundy. Winemaker Thierry Brouin, who started at Domaine des Lambrays in 1980, described 2001 as "a normal vintage, an easy vintage without any special problems." He noted that the 2014 Clos des Lambrays may be a bit more powerful but in a similar style.

A mature yet attractively fresh nose offers up floral, earthy and spicy red berry fruit aromas that are showing traces of secondary development and are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. There is a really lovely mouth feel to the beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors that display a subtle mineral streak before culminating in a complex, balanced and lingering finish where a touch of the wood influence resurfaces. There isn't much unresolved tannin remaining and for my taste this has arrived on the front edge of its peak drinkability though it should remain here for at least another decade. 2001 is an elegant vintage for this wine and I very much like it.

Medium red. Subtle, nuanced aromas of smoky red fruits, flowers and minerals. A step up in aromatic complexity and class, with strong soil tones of berries, minerals, underbrush and earth. The wine's solid acidity and strong minerality give it superb definition and inner-mouth energy. Suave, silky and long on the back end, which features very fine tannins. It remains to be seen if the 2002 will express its terroir as clearly as this wine.
