This wine represents the best 2 acres (0.8 ha) of the Horseshoe vineyard, which is planted to a mix of heritage and mass-selection vines at 1,600 ft (490 m) elevation. The soil depths range from 6 to 24 inches (15 to 60 cm) above the Monterey shale formation, and range in slope from 10% to 30%. Compelling aroma of bright raspberry and pomegranate fruit. Intensely bright raspberry and pomegranate flavours have that lovely woodiness of pomegranate seeds along with dried herbs and dried flowers. Absolutely electric acidity keeps the fruit vibrating through a long citrusy finish. Scintillating and exciting and utterly delicious. (AY)
The 2018 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Hillsides, from the rim of the upper plateau, is a heady, exotic wine. Black cherry, licorice, menthol, cloves and leather build in a potent, sumptuous wine that marries fruit intensity and structure. Readers should plan on being patient with the 2018, as it won’t be ready to drink anytime soon. This is an especially dense, savory style.
