Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2019-2039, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Oct 2019

Good dark red. Seriously rich, deep aromas of black cherry, currant, tobacco, chocolate and sexy soil tones, plus a whiff of leather that adds complexity. Wonderfully rich, deep, tactile Volnay with a remarkably chewy texture and outstanding dimension to its flavors of strawberry, redcurrant, mocha, tobacco and cocoa powder. The salty, monumental finish features huge, mouthcoating tannins and outstanding rising length. This very complete wine boasts uncanny depth of flavor, particularly in light of the vintage's healthy yields. By far the best bottle of this wine that I have tasted to date. (13.45% alcohol; September 24 harvest; 41 h/h; 3.37 pH)

Harvest 24 September, yield 41 hl/ha, pH 3.37. Powerful. Glowing ruby. Evolved rim. Perfect point of evolution on the nose. Sweet and aromatic-sweet compound that’s almost mentholated. Just very slightly dry on the end but that is to pick holes. Very robust and confident. But it lacks the drive and refreshment of the 1996. Mouth-filling. (JR)

Mature and far from fat. Dry end. Lots of spine. Gamey. Probably a bit more evolved that the 2009s will be in 2025. (JR)

The 1999 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has always been an impressive wine, although here I did not think it quite achieved the level of the bottle poured at the vertical back in September 2010. Noticeably deep in colour, it maintains that sense of opulence on the nose with pastille-like purity: raspberry and wild strawberry, then blackcurrant following later. The palate has very good density and balance, more structure and more sinew than the 2002 Clos des Ducs but not quite the same degree of finesse. This is a little burlier (like many '99s at the moment.) You could approach this now, though I would prefer to leave it another two or three years.
