The 2012 Barolo Otin Fiorin Piè Rupestris - Nebioli has really gained in weight and stature since I last tasted it. On this night, the 2012 impresses with its substance and stature, qualities that emerge fully with a bit of time in the glass. The 2012 continues to come together during this early part of its life. It is one of the positive surprises of the evening.

Serralunga d'Alba. Pale rust red. Hint of cheesiness on the nose but very distinctive indeed. Really rich and wild. Gypsy-cream biscuits! Such persistence. Difficult to spit this one as it offers so much. Rich without being sweet. So exciting! (JR)

Cappellano's 2012 Barolo Rupestris is sweet, round and inviting. Crushed red berries, mint, cinnamon and kirsch give the 2012 its open-knit, racy personality. Medium in body, with exotic perfume and striking balance, the 2012 will drink well with minimal cellaring.

Cappellano's 2012 Barolo Rupestris is a striking wine. Bright red cherry, mint, white pepper and cranberry give the 2012 much of its lifted, airy personality. Of the two Cappellano Barolos, the Rupestris is usually deep, rich and overt (in relative terms of course), but today, the Rupestris is much more finessed than I remember seeing in the past. Rose petal, dried herbs, red fruits and herbs reappear on the finish. Simply put, the 2012 is a fabulous Barolo Rupestris. Naturally, the tannins need time to soften, but the 2012 is incredibly harmonious today.

Serralunga d’Alba’s Cappellano is one of Barolo’s most legendary producers, producing ultra-traditional styles of Nebbiolo. Made famous by Teobaldo and now in the hands of his son Augusto, the estate is best known for its Barolo Piè Franco, a wine from ungrafted vines in the Gabutti Cru.
