(70% monastrell with 30% cabernet sauvignon) Deep, bright ruby. Powerful aromas of blackberry, blueberry, smoky herbs, potpourri and Asians spices. Weighty dark berry flavors display a liqueur-like depth, with zesty minerality providing lift and velvety tannins adding support. Manages to be large-scaled and lithe at once, finishing with real cut and clarity. This seamless wine is delicious now, and I'd be inclined to drink it young for its alluring, vivacious fruit.

The purple/black 2006 Clio is composed of 70% old vine Monastrell and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 26 months in new oak. It offers up a super-sexy nose of underbrush, incense, lavender, blueberry muffin, and black currant. Voluptuous and creamy on the palate, this loaded, well-balanced wine is a total turn-on. For those who prefer their flavor in moderation, look elsewhere. Drink this pleasure-bent effort from 2011 to 2021. Bodegas El Nido employs Aussie vigneron Chris Ringland as its winemaking consultant. Importer: Jorge Ordonez, Fine Estates From Spain, Dedham, MA; tel. (781) 461-5767

El Nido is a joint venture between the Gil family (Finca Luzon, Juan Gil) and the Australia winemaker, Chris Ringland. The 2006 Bodegas El Nido Jumilla Clio is a blend of 30% Cabernet Sauvignon from 29 year old vines and 70% Monastrell from 64 year old vines and sees 26 months in new French and American oak barrels. Offering up a decidedly ripe, decadent bouquet of blackberry, cassis, coffee, oak and smoke, this is a slutty, full bore wine with full body, huge texture, sweet fruit and a long finish. The only nit would be that it’s slightly soft on the palate and lacks a little edge. I’m not complaining though and loved it.

70% Monastrell, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very young and slightly reduced at the moment. Sweet and juicy and impressive but for tasting not for drinking. (JH)
