Looking first at the classic 2005 Gigondas, it has a beautiful core of fruit to go with textbook Saint Cosme tar, licorice and toasted spice. Made from 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre that saw no destemming (this estate never destems) and in older tanks and concrete, it’s aging beautifully, has medium to full-bodied richness, a great mid-palate and enough chewy tannin on the finish to keep it going strong for another decade.

Mid ruby. Seems as though there is much more intensity here than the 2007, which is unexpected. Very expressive and ready with lots of fine tannins underneath. (JR)
Ruby-red. Intensely spiced red fruits on the nose, with licorice and cracked pepper adding complexity. Weighty and firm, with solid tannins framing bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors. Finishes solid and long. This is very young and not much fun today.
Recommend by a friend and the 2005 Château de Saint-Cosme Gigondas is a serious wine that shows deep, rich flavors and plenty of depth and structure to warrant some cellar time. Raspberry, licorice, black pepper and smoked meat aromas are framed by earth, roasted herbs and spice notes. This really took some air to unwind but is big, rich and shows stunning southern Rhone flavors with a masculine, burly character. Medium bodied with rich fruit, beautiful structure and a medium to long, very tannic finish.
