Pale fox-red with a mass of black sediment off which it was decanted three hours before serving, having been stood up for at least the hour recommended by Paul Symington. This wine is now quite delicate with toasty notes of cookies and prunes. Deserves to be savoured but I don't regret having opened the majority of bottles in the case of a dozen I laid down so many years ago. (JR)

Pale ruby with lots of chewy sediment. Very vigorous and peppery. Not very very sweet. Grainy texture with still life in it even though it's probably aromatically nearly fully evolved. (JR)
Mid garnet-tawny. Hint of mint lifts a smoky, black fruit, caramel and fig nose. Rich and full on the palate, but with a degree of mellowness too. Polished and fine, in its weighty, powerful idiom. (TJ)
Pale ruby with an even paler rim. As soon as the cork was just half-pulled, the (admittedly small) room was filled with the aroma of candied rose petals. This is surely at its peak with the spirit just peeking through at the end after a luxuriously smooth texture. Medium sweetness and really quite delicate. (JR)
