Dark ruby/crimson. Heady nose – crystallised violets and massive intensity. Firm tannins lurking under massive sweetness and a strong floral element. Lots of mass but not beefy. Very fine tannins so not quite ready yet. Big and bold. (JR)

Very dark crimson (much darker than the Noval LBV 2007). Quite uncompromising and peppery but with masses of rich, ripe fruit underneath. The wine is somehow much more serious than the dimpled bottle suggests. Serve this instead of a young vintage port. VGV (JR)
The 2007 Fonseca is maturing nicely, with a perfumed, high toned, rich bouquet of macerated black cherries, blueberry, creme de cassis and vanilla. The palate is very harmonious with plush dark cherry fruit, fresh fig, salted licorice and a supple, rounded, spicy finish that delivers wonderful purity and length. This is a sexy Fonseca, perhaps more generous and alluring than the 2009 – a quintessential Fonseca that should peak in 15-20 years time.
Dark, dense crimson. Very sweet and winning on the nose. Amazingly claret-like in many ways with lots of ripe fruit and ripe tannins and pzazz. Just a bit more residual sugar than on Taylor 2007 but there's a dry, appetising streak here too. A rather atypical Fonseca but a delicious, sappy one. (JR)
