Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru comes across as a little oaky on the nose and quite reduced, though there is sufficient fruit to support it. It just needs time. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, slightly leafy red berry fruit, a little austere yet displaying reasonable if not extraordinary length. I was hoping to see a repeat of its splendid showing from barrel -- it was not to be, at least not on this occasion. Tasted September 2016.

Good medium red. Less about primary fruits on the nose than the Chapelle, showing cool menthol and mineral notes and a sauvage earthy aspect. Juicy but tight; conveys a less-ripe impression than the Chapelle but offers excellent energy and cut to its cherry and cassis fruit flavors. Notes of spices, herbs and salty minerality give the finish a slightly austere character. This was also 12.6% potential alcohol at harvest, but it doesn't show the weight or the stuffing--or the early balance--of the Chapelle. Latricières is a cooler terroir than Chapelle, and it shows in these two 2013s.
Healthy deep red. Wild aromas of dark raspberry, black cherry and truffle. Sweeter and darker in its fruit character than the Chapelle-Chambertin, showing more intensity and mid-palate tension too. A more noble grand cru, finishing with fine-grained tannins, slowly building length and a subtle saline quality.
The 2013 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has a serious bouquet with the same disposition as the Chapelle-Chambertin: focused, intense, obdurate and introspective. The palate is a little more succulent perhaps, the acidity very well judged, with a pastille-like purity on the elegant finish. What a great grand cru that will surely age over the long-term, one of oenophiles with considerable patience.||In a show of solidarity, in 2013 Jean-Louis Trapet sold his Bourgogne Rouge to fellow biodynamic winemakers in Volnay who had been devastated by the hail. Apart from that demonstration of charity, Jean-Louis has presided a deeply impressive range of 2013s that may even outclass his outstanding 2012s. He told me that he used around 30% whole bunch fruit for his premier crus and 40% for the grand crus. They are very taut and linear wines, pure and direct, laconic even compared to their peers, wines that will repay cellaring. I found that the terroir expression here was magnified by the growing season and perhaps also by the biodynamic practices that Jean-Louis abides by. The wines are a little overlooked by cognoscenti, who perhaps pay more attention to Jean-Marie Fourrier just up the RN74. But do not ignore these marvelous 2013s. eRobertParker.com.January, 2015
