The 2021 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru has a perfumed and floral nose, perhaps a little more "worked" than its peers, but there is plenty of clean and fresh black cherry and raspberry fruit to savour under a veneer of reduction. Returning to my glass after ten minutes, it has closed up and become more monotone because of that aforementioned reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with wild strawberry and raspberry notes. There is a little more grip and density here, with touches of sour cherry, bergamot, white tea and bay leaf on the finish that does attenuate. Not bad overall - I would give this another 12 to 18 months in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Cask sample taken before Christmas! Very pale garnet. Sweet start and not as vibrant as the later-drawn samples from Tollot shown chez Goedhuis. Just a little stodgy, but NB sample detail. (JR)
The 2021 Beaune Les Grèves 1er Cru, picked on the first day of picking, has slightly darker fruit than the Clos du Roi, but there is still a sense of delineation and transparency that makes it very alluring. The palate is medium-bodied with dark cherries, bergamot and bay leaf. It's nicely structured with a bit of sinew on the finish. This is very promising.
