Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2025-2050, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Jan 2025

The 2009 Riesling Clos Ste Hune comes from a very warm vintage yet with cool nights. The intensely yellow-colored wine opens with a deep, pure and intense, lemony bouquet with limestone aromas. Very elegant and refined on the palate, this is a remarkably finessed and refreshing 2009 that doesn’t have the power and muscles of the 2019, but it has remarkable balance. It is clear, dry and finely tannic on the finish yet also reveals intense and juicy fruit. This has 14% stated alcohol with 2.9 grams per liter of residual sugar. Tasted on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Clos Ste Hune at the beginning of November at the Domaine Trimbach in Ribeauvillé.

‘A harsh winter led to a late bud burst, followed by a flowering in early June due to high temperatures in April and May. July was rather gloomy, but August was very fine and warm. The grapes enjoyed ideal ripening conditions Great richness, high potential but good acidity in the Ribeauvillé sector.’ Harvested in early October at a potential alcohol of 14%. Hot vintage, following the even hotter 2003. But cool nights as usual in Alsace. There was no need for selection. RS 2.9 g/l, TA 7.4 g/l. An orange note in the gold hue. Quite a bit of evolution on the nose. Green vegy notes. A lovely vintage to drink now. Long, quite rich. (JR)

A bold and powerful dry riesling with a compact, full-bodied palate. Lots of candied-orange and dried-peach character with a hint of toasted rye bread. Dense and muscular front and mid-palates, then the finish is way fresher and more exciting than the nose suggested. The 14% alcohol is well integrated. Drink or hold.

Quite developed on the nose for a seven-year-old Clos Ste Hune – doubtless thanks to the ripeness of the vintage. Already very broachable. (JR)
