Punteggio 85/100 · Da bere 2022-2027, Neal Martin, Mar 2021

The 2018 Château de Ferrand has a light, earthy bouquet, not nearly as intense as its peers, although it has gained a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and modest depth, but it does attenuate toward the finish. Not long-term.

Lots of smoky cherry and currant fruits and meaty, spicy, cedary notes emerge from the 2018 Château De Ferrand, which comes from a beautiful, cooler terroir on the eastern side of the appellation. Medium to full-bodied and beautifully textured on the palate, it has ripe, seamless tannins, wonderful purity of fruit, and outstanding length. This outstanding wine will develop additional complexity with 2-4 years in the cellar and will drink brilliantly over the following 15+ years.

The 2018 de Ferrand feels rather dour on the nose, a lack of vivacity and delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that are smothered with toasty new oak that makes the finish generic.
