100% Grenache Noir. Mahogany brown. An astoundingly complex array of aromas. Baroque in its intricate weaving – each return to the glass reveals more. Dried figs, prunes, earl grey tea, roasted walnuts, pecans, Bovril, and a dense spiciness. The list could go on. A palate of silky depths and concentration, the sweetness entirely melded into the rich panoply of flavours, which constantly evolve and shift. And such bright freshness, too! Endless. Superlative. Grenache Noir aged in glass demijohns outside and then for many years in huge, old oak barrels. Looks like prune juice. Smells like liquorice tea, smoked aniseed and linseeds. Amazingly smoky and meaty. Prunes. Staggering concentration – it feels as if it's been extracted from the core of the earth. There is so much here that it's impossible to do any justice to this wine in a quick tasting. This wine needs hours of time and attention. It's a towering sculpture of a wine. To grasp it, you'd need to sit with it, listen to it, give it space to tell its stories. (TC)
The medium ruby-colored 1999 Vintage, produced entirely from Grenache Noir, sports a complex nose of candied blood oranges and blackberries. This exquisitely balanced wine (15.5% alcohol and 105 grams of residual sugar per liter) delights the palate with sweet plums, black raspberries, dark cherries, and molasses-like flavors.
