From grapes grown at 2,000-feet-elevation, on older vines, the 2022 Pinot Noir Coastview Vineyard needs time in the glass to come around, tight in thick tannins and gravelly texture. A floral, feral nose of rose and violet complement a dark fruit profile and depth of woody reduction, medium-bodied in intensity and length. Drink best 2029-2032.

From a site at 2,200 feet in elevation in the newly minted Gabilan Mountains AVA, the 2022 Pinot Noir Coastview Vineyard is one of the richer, more structured Pinots in this lineup, and I quite like it for that. It's more rugged and less easygoing than the others, but that’s not a bad thing. As is usually the protocol at Big Basin, it was done with 100% whole clusters and spent 18 months in barrel, yielding a wine of deep macerated cherry fruit and spicy, stony, smoky character. The oak is nicely integrated, but the finish trails off slightly faster than I’d like.
