Drunk over the course of an evening, the 2006 Ermitage Ex Voto is a ripe, layered, sexy Hermitage that shows the style of the vintage beautifully. Some bloody red and black fruits, iron, bacon fat, and herbes de Provence-like notes define the aromatics, and it's clearly in the middle of its prime drink window, with a complex, nuanced style. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, this outstanding Hermitage has absorbed every hint of its 42 months in oak, has integrated tannins, and terrific overall balance. There's no need to hold off, and it should continue to impress over the coming decade.

More classic in style than the '07, with lots of iodine, powdered rock, beef blood, leather and meaty dark fruits, the 2006 Hermitage Ex Voto is full-bodied, rich, structured and powerful, with high tannin and notable freshness. It's still youthful, and while this vintage generally produced charming, fruit-loaded wine, this has a serious, slightly masculine feel.
