Punteggio 94+/100 · Da bere 2024-2038, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2017

Saturated dark red with ruby tones. Very dark aromas of cassis and blackberry lifted by violet, rose petal and pepper nuances. Wonderfully fine-grained and suave, with the peppery herbal element keeping the wine's brisk dark berry flavors under wraps in the early going. A distinctly drier and more laid-back wine than the Echézeaux but with a strong impression of salty extract. Most impressive today on the suavely tannic, very long, downright urgent finish, which dusts the palate with minerals, flowers and spices. Classy juice!

(from vines planted in 1926): Slightly inky aromas of dark berries, licorice and violet, along with a cool leafy element. Boasts a thick, velour-like texture and powerful underlying structure but comes across as extremely backward today, and tougher than the 2012 was last year at this stage. Showing little in the way of easy sweetness but conveys an impression of powerful extract and solidity. Finishes saline, dry and very long, with a surprisingly light touch. Laurent loves this wine but today I prefer the Echézeaux.
