Da bere 2026-2040, FINE+RARE, Nov 2023

Benoît Stehly has five different parcels around Clos de la Roche, largely on calcareous soils (in the lieux-dits of Les Mochamps, Les Chabiots, Les Fremières, Clos de la Roche and Les Genavrières). The resulting wine is stunning – an ethereal and delicate Grand Cru. There’s a spicy intensity, yet the wine feels transparent, skipping across the senses with pretty red fruit, a refreshing juiciness, a crunch to the texture and chalky mineral notes, with fine tannins that build gradually, giving a grip to the long finish. Aged in 40% new oak, the barrels used for this see a longer, gentler toast than those for the Clos Saint-Denis.

The 2022 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru derives from multiple parcels that together amount to one hectare. Mingling notions of plums and red berries with hints of orange zest, petals and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and lively and more obviously structured by sweet, powdery tannin than the more sensual Clos Saint-Denis.
