Dark violet. Sexy dark berry and floral aromas are complicated by anise, incense and cola. Deep in dark fruit and cherry pit flavor but energetic, with potent mineral and floral qualities gaining strength with air. The floral and mineral notes echo on the clear, sweet finish.
From a vineyard planted in schist soils, the 2007 Cote Rotie Les Rochains exhibits an inky/purple color in addition to a more exotic, floral-scented nose displaying notions of sweet raspberry and cassis fruit, licorice, underbrush, and pain grille. Super-exotic, flamboyant, and remarkably soft and velvety, it should drink beautifully for 10-15 years. It is a hedonistic, head-turning, top-notch Cote Rotie. (Not yet released) This small, 14-acre estate is one of the finest in Cote Rotie (the Bonnefonds also own 2.5 acres in Condrieu), and their 2007 offerings are among the top wines of the vintage in this appellation. Dense and lively and playful and very seductive. A bit modern but not excessively oaked. Well formed and polished. (JR)
