Aromatically, the 2000 Riesling Privat is dominated by sun-drenched minerals. On the palate, this superb offering exhibits the richness and depth common in wines from this warm, ripe year, yet it also displays a level of elegance and delineation that is stunning. The wine is highly-detailed, with huge levels of dry extract and expressive pear, apple, mineral, and chalk flavors. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015+. This year's regular Piri riesling was characterized by relatively simple lemon and peach flavors, but the Privat selection from the same site is far from simple. At once creamier and richer in texture and yet even more pointedly, pungently spicy and decisively mineral than the Hochacker (which is itself another parcel in the Piri), this Privat needn't fear comparison with any of its illustrious predecessors. Dripping with peach and watermelon fruit, it still leaves room for a subtle diversity of floral and mineral elements to penetrate and persist. 2 stars.
