Tasted blind in Hong Kong, this bottle of Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Malconsorts 2001 from Sylvain Cathiard merely reaffirmed by opinion that he has produced much better wines in other vintages. Here it has a candied blackcurrant and truffle-scented bouquet with an odd tree-bark scent. The palate is structured and dense, but it is missing the finesse and elegance of a premier cru and feels just a little monotonous on the finish, I suspect because of excessive use of new oak.

Magnum. The wine was tasting a little bit strict but was utterly correct. Slightly rough, rustic nose but no shortage of ripe fruit. (JR)
Cask sample Chestnut nose. Sleek and lively and charming. Much more substantial than the Nuits-St-Georges Aux Murgers. Very good balance. Lots of fruit to compensate for the fine tannins. Delightful. (JR)
