Punteggio 92+/100 · Da bere 2024-2036, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2017

(from a parcel close to Bouchard's in En Orveaux): Good medium red. Medicinal cherry, licorice, peppery herbs and minerals on the nose, lifted by a floral topnote. At once dense, fine-grained and juicy; seamless but a bit withdrawn, even reduced, offering savory mineral complexity to its redcurrant, raspberry and cranberry fruit flavors. Uncompromisingly dry wine in a cool, energetic, even slightly lean style, in need of patience. But there's lovely density of texture here. The tannins are firm-edged on the lively, youthfully medicinal back end. This grand cru gained in sweetness with extended aeration.

(from en Orveaux next to the Combe d'Orveaux but situated on a steep, south-facing slope with thin white topsoil): Bright red-ruby. Lovely perfumed aromas of rose petal, minerals and espresso. Boasts superb definition and energy in the mouth, accentuated by a high level of CO2. Youthfully backward and very long, showing no edges. This is always the Faiveley grand cru picked with the lowest potential alcohol, noted technical manager Jerôme Flous. Quite uncompromising in the early going.

Mid crimson. Subdued on the nose, just a little spicy, and subtle on the palate. Dry but smooth texture. Lithe and lightly dark fruited. In harmony and very long, but could do with putting on a bit of weight. (JH)
