Matured for 22 months in French oak (60 – 70% new). Tasted blind. Upfront spice and toast. Restrained fruit. Dry, powerful palate with plenty of acidity and a bitter finish. Not much complexity, in truth. Only just-ripe fruit. Because it is a little mute and requires age, perhaps this is Burgundy – one of the more austere appellations. Pommard? (RH)

The 2016 Échezeaux Grand Cru is the most perfumed as well as the most sweetly fruited in the lineup. Beautiful notes of spiced strawberries, blueberries, damp forest floor, white truffle, and a limestone-like minerality all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, silky, beautifully layered Echezeaux that has brilliant balance and purity. It has sweet tannins and terrific ripeness, yet it stays elegant, seamless, and weightless on the palate, and while already hard to resist, it’s going to evolve beautifully for two decades.
The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru is a success, unwinding in the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of cherries, cassis, candied peel and incense, framed by some spicy new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and powerful, with satiny tannins, an ample core of fruit, succulent acids and a long, oak-inflected but persistent finish. This shows considerable promise.
