100% Syrah grown on very high terraces with galets and clay. Dark garnet with a ruby rim. Cream cheese and leather on the nose. Very dense and commanding. Makes me think I don’t taste Hermitage nearly often enough. Nothing remotely sweet about this impressive beast on the nose though there is ripe fruit as it enters the palate and then the acidity and (still) tannin makes its presence felt. Quite magnificent. Uncompromising. Real energy. Proper wine. (JR)

Another wine drinking at maturity is the 2000 Ermitage le Meal. Offering up a fresh, nicely defined bouquet of dark fruits, gamy meats, pepper, mint and hints of olive, it's medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, supple and delicious. Like the 2001, it's drinking at point but should hold nicely for another decade.
Notably dark crimson. Autumnal, almost compost notes. Not as concentrated as the Pavillon even though it is 14.5% rather than Pavillon’s 14% alcohol but very racy and captivating. Very long and powerful with more obvious acidity. Real life to this wine. (JR)
