The to-be-auctioned Riesling trocken 2020 Riesling Alte Reben La Borne (Versteigerung) comes from a parcel above the Morstein. The wine opens very clear and delicately spicy on the pure and stony nose that combines mineral freshness with deep, elegant and juicy fruit. Puristic, grippy and very salty on the palate, this is a refined, elegant and, compared to 2019, less dramatic Riesling that was aged in a 600-liter oak barrel. Tasted in Wiesbaden at the end of August 2021.

Nahe auction wine, 13 November 2021. La Borne is a small special parcel of old vines in the Morstein vineyard, something like the holy grail of Philipp Wittmann’s dry Riesling kingdom. The vines have been cultivated by biodynamic methods for many years now, and there can be no doubt that this contributes to the expression of pure minerality and clean fruit. The palate combines the ripe and yet crisp flavour of stone fruit with a subtle herbal freshness and a touch of solid rock on the finish. (MS)
