55% Grenache Blanc, 30% Clairette Rose, 15% Bourboulenc. Lemon juice, a touch of dried herbs – reminds me of lavender. Very fragrant. Fresh and appetising. Good stuff. (RH)

A blend of Syrah and Counoise (the Grenache didn't make it as they had to add SO2), the 2016 Côtes du Rhône Nature offers lots of pretty berry fruits, peppery herbs and hints of leafy herbs in its charming, medium-bodied, delicious style. It's supple, textured and about as quaffable as it gets. Clos du Caillou, under the helm of the Vacheron family, with Bruno Gaspard as winemaker and Philippe Cambie as consultant, continues to release a bevy of brilliant Côtes du Rhônes and Châteauneuf du Papes. As I wrote last year, the style has shifted slightly towards the more elegant side of the spectrum and apparent with the 2015s, which at times had me wishing for slightly more density and breadth, especially with the top cuvees. Nevertheless, the wines are brilliant and the 2015 vintage as a whole is a more streamlined, elegant vintage. The 2016s appear to be a return to wines with more oomph, density, and depth, and I think are a clear step up.

The estate's entry-level wine, the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Le Caillou is a stunning value, offering gluggable cherry and blueberry fruit, ample weight and a velvety texture. This Grenache-dominated blend should drink well for the next 5 years.
