Bottled in one of Kopke's cute dumpy half bottles, with stencilled white lettering. Almost more sienna brown than tawny, it not really any red colour left – unsurprisingly. But if the colour is showing the wine's age, the aroma and flavour are still remarkably alive and youthful. Stunning aroma of caramel and walnuts, dark, unsweet toffee and caramelised Seville orange. Amazing complexity and still so lifted and lively. On the palate, age has given it a certain viscosity and the flavours are incredibly intense, sweet but with that burnt toffee and walnut intensity to make it anything but cloying. Super-concentrated and still so fresh. A miracle of longevity. Endlessly long and rich and beautifully balanced. (JH)

With my suggested drinking dates I'm taking a wild guess as to when this wine from the Sogevinus group was taken out of the wood in which it has presumably spent most of its life to be put into the charming and useful half bottle which Nick and I enjoyed over a couple of nights. This was very pale tawny and had a most beguiling rose scent and lots of sweetness but no great heaviness, not a trace of tannin and no concentration. A charming, round drink. More port should go into half bottles. (JR)
