This 13% alcohol, adamantly dry bottling is more dominantly mineral than any other Goldtröpfchen I can recall. Smoke, alkali and wet stone are conspicuous on the nose. Yet at the same time, brightness, penetration and juiciness of lemon and grapefruit counteract a tendency toward austerity or weightiness. The oily feel on this bottling’s full palate suggests citrus oil extracts, and peel as well as seed figure prominently on the piquant, darkly smoky, stone-lined finish. Fortunately, the aforementioned juiciness persists as well.

If you want to experience the beautiful side of sponti (short for wines fermented by ambient yeasts), it doesn’t get better than Thomas Haag’s Goldtröpfchen in 2018. It proves that the fragrance can be delivered with invigorating green-minty freshness and could probably clear a blocked nose more effectively than Sinex. It may cost more, but then again you can also drink it. On the palate it’s all about the combination of crunchy green herbs and assertive minerality, nuances of fruit and spice completing an outstanding Grosses Gewächs. (MS)
