Distillery Tasting Note

A little over a year ago, we stumbled upon an incredible warehouse find up in the cold north of Japan: a blend of Karuizawa malt and Kawasaki grain from the late 70s, that had been slumbering in glass for over three decades. Thrilled to discover it wasn’t just a historic curiosity but great liquid from a time when most whisky produced in Japan wasn’t much to write home about, we revived it for the present-day as the seventh in our series of Japanese whiskies featuring prints from Yoshitoshi’s “new Forms of 36 ghosts”: a flash from Showa past in high definition.

Karuizawa
Karuizawa

Karuizawa is an increasingly rare Japanese single malt from a permanently closed distillery. When Karuizawa was built in 1955, the goal was to create a Japanese whisky in the Scottish tradition. In the mid-1950s, that meant Sherry-aged whiskies like The Macallan.
