The Massandra winery has been in operation in the Crimean Peninsula since 1894. They produce fortified wines of extraordinary complexity and ageing potential. Following the collapse of the USSR and the independence of the Ukraine, Russia stopped trading with the winery, which was by far its largest market. Facing bankruptcy, and desperate to pay its 4,500 workers, for the first time in its history, Massandra sold some of its finest wines to collectors in the West. This is where this rare collection of wines comes from. The 1939 Kagor Ayu Dag is made from red varietals (it is thought Malbec) and has an incredibly haunting, complex aroma. Rich and viscous on the palate at over 80 years old the wine is in incredible condition and seems indestructible.

Looks pretty much the same as the whites of this age! Malbec, it is thought. (‘Kagor’ = Cahors.) Great freshness and vitality with some trace of tannin left! Real structure and acidity.
